A Tough Axis Hunt
Saturday was supposed to be a quick and easy Axis Hunt, but as every hunter knows, you can never know what to expect.
The day's hunt started at 6:30 when the hunters departed from the Texas Hunt Lodge with their guide. At 9:00am, I got a phone call from our guides that stated it was going to be a little more difficult that previously thought to get these bucks on the ground. The weather was unusually warm, the wind was swirling about 20 miles per hour out of the West, and the Bucks where more skittish than usual. I got to the ranch at 10:00am and jumped right into the hunt with our guys. By noon, we had one nice big buck on the ground. It took about 5 miles of walking, and a few shots, but the buck finally came to see the end of my camera.
We took an hour break for lunch, and by this time it was nearly 90 degrees outside. All of the deer were bedded down for the heat of the day, but we had a mission to get one more buck on the ground. We did just about everything that afternoon from Safari Style and finding bucks laying under trees to Spot and Stalk walking over hundreds of acres. We finally got a good line of sight on a buck about 120 yards into the oak thicket. It took 2 shots, but we finally saw the Axis buck hit the ground. He was a nice dark horned buck with some rut damage to his left side, but nothing a good taxidermist can't fix.
By 6:00pm , we were wrapped up for the day, (2) Axis Bucks hanging at the Meat Processor, and (2) tired, but Happy Hunters.
