An 82 yr old Client of the Texas Hunt Lodge, a Hunt Package provider near Kerrville, TX, hunted and harvested the new World Record White Buffalo this week. 

Retired Major Don Wortman, Vietnam Veteran, of Ingram, TX, booked the hunt with Texas Hunt Lodge owner, Aaron Bulkley, earlier in the month.  The hunt took place on the Las Catarinas Ranch in northwest Kerr County off of Hwy 83 and was guided by Texas Hunt Lodge manager Justin Taylor of Kerrville. 

 

Don Wortman is 6-time Primitive Arms Hunter of the Year and National Champion US Musket Shooter.  Don is probably one of the most experienced hunters in the World today having harvested over 100 different trophies from around the World. 

 

The World Record White Buffalo Hunt was exciting for everyone involved.  The hunt started around 9:30 Tuesday morning, and by 11:00, Wortman, with the help of Guide Justin Taylor, had located the Buffalo herd and were gauging the trophies from a distance of 200 yards.  Wortman and his guide hunted the Buffalo via Safari Style on a 1000+ acre game ranch, Las Catarinas.  Just about the time Wortman had made up his mind on which Bison to shoot, the wind changed, and the Buffalo, feeling that something was wrong or they were in danger, ran at full speed, horns down, heads shaking and heels kicking, for the hunter and his guide.  Wortman and Taylor jumped in the truck, and slammed on the gas for the opposite direction.  The Bison herd did not let up…they chased the hunter and guide for over 2 miles before they finally stopped.  Taylor whipped the truck back around and got Wortman to a distance of 66 yards for a broadside shot on the big bull.  One perfect shot with his Civil War era Percussion Cap Muzzle Loader, and the Big Bill stopped in his tracks. 

 

Wortman’s Monster White Buffalo had impressive 20 inch horns with over 14 inch bases making it the pending World Record White Buffalo for Trophy Game Records of the World.     The White Buffalo will now be honored as a Diamond Trophy (largest ever taken for that species and method of hunting) for TGR Record Books this coming year. 

 

White buffalo are American bison (American buffalo) that are considered to be sacred signs in several Native American religions, and thus have great spiritual importance in those cultures and are visited for prayer and other religious ceremonies.  White buffalo are extremely rare; The National Bison Association has estimated that they only occur in approximately one out of every 10 million births.
