U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced on
Thursday, July 7, 2011, a proposed rule to
regulate the take of three endangered exotic
antelope species - the scimitar-horned oryx, dama
                              gazelle, and addax.

FWS was required to issue this proposed rule as a
result of a 2009 order from the federal
                              court.

proposed rule states that the FWS will issue
permits for the take of the three antelope
species, in a manner similar to the way in which
permits are issued for other exotic captive bred
                              wildlife in the United States.

Hunt Lodge will continue booking these hunts over
the next 45-60 days, or until, the permit process
has been determined, when we will be told exactly
what new guidelines we must follow...either way,
hunters can expect to see higher trophy fees due
to permitting, quotas set by FWS, and money that
must be donated to certain "save the species
                              funds".

An 82 yr old Client of the Texas Hunt Lodge, a Hunt Package provider near Kerrville, TX, hunted and harvested the new World Record White Buffalo this week.

Retired Major Don Wortman, Vietnam Veteran, of Ingram, TX, booked the hunt with Texas Hunt Lodge owner, Aaron Bulkley, earlier in the month. The hunt took place on the Las Catarinas Ranch in northwest Kerr County off of Hwy 83 and was guided by Texas Hunt Lodge manager Justin Taylor of Kerrville.

Don Wortman is 6-time Primitive Arms Hunter of the Year and National Champion US Musket Shooter. Don is probably one of the most experienced hunters in the World today having harvested over 100 different trophies from around the World.

The World Record White Buffalo Hunt was exciting for everyone involved. The hunt started around 9:30 Tuesday morning, and by 11:00, Wortman, with the help of Guide Justin Taylor, had located the Buffalo herd and were gauging the trophies from a distance of 200 yards. Wortman and his guide hunted the Buffalo via Safari Style on a 1000+ acre game ranch, Las Catarinas. Just about the time Wortman had made up his mind on which Bison to shoot, the wind changed, and the Buffalo, feeling that something was wrong or they were in danger, ran at full speed, horns down, heads shaking and heels kicking, for the hunter and his guide. Wortman and Taylor jumped in the truck, and slammed on the gas for the opposite direction. The Bison herd did not let up…they chased the hunter and guide for over 2 miles before they finally stopped. Taylor whipped the truck back around and got Wortman to a distance of 66 yards for a broadside shot on the big bull. One perfect shot with his Civil War era Percussion Cap Muzzle Loader, and the Big Bill stopped in his tracks.

Wortman’s Monster White Buffalo had impressive 20 inch horns with over 14 inch bases making it the pending World Record White Buffalo for Trophy Game Records of the World. The White Buffalo will now be honored as a Diamond Trophy (largest ever taken for that species and method of hunting) for TGR Record Books this coming year.

White buffalo are <span style="color: windowtext;
What has a tail like a horse, a hump like a buffalo, the head of a cow, and hairier than the elusive Big Foot monster? It's called a "Yak" and Texas Hunt Lodge has a herd of them that are ready for the taking. These are young Yak with lean tender meat.

Far from Texas, high in the Himalayian mountian tops more than 3000 thousands years ago, herds of wild Yak roamed freely in sub-zero tempretures. By contrast, compare that image to the Great American Bison and the wide-open Plains of North America, to gather a converse sense of the masses.

Today, in most parts of the world, the Yak is an indangered speices and no longer available for game hunting. That is why Texas Hunt Lodge is especially happy to provide this rare hunting opportunity for our guest.

For more information visit Texas Hunt Lodge Online: www.TexasHuntLodge.com
Voted "Ranch of the Year" and "Outfitter of the Year" 2009-2010

Wildebeest & Zebra, Both with One Shot

While I was out at the Las Catarina's Ranch near Kerrville, TX this morning delivering food to some of the guys. While driving back to the main gate I spotted a group of several Zebra and Wildebeest roaming together. Las Catarina's is just one of the many ranches that Texas Hunt Lodge manages game for, so everyday is always a new adventure.

To research your hunting options and discover what the Texas Hill Country, the "Exotic Game Capital" of Texas, has to offer, visit Texas Hunt Lodge online at http://www.TexasHuntLodge.com

New Father and Son/Daughter Hunt Packages for Spring 2011

It's been a busy winter here at Texas Hunt Lodge and now we are gearing up for some great spring time adventures . It won't be long before the schools let out and the kids will be looking for something fun to do. So now is the perfect time to start planning a Father Son/Daughter hunt here in the Texas Hill Country.

This year we have put together 3 specials that will be fun and affordable.

Our #1 Father and Son/Daugther Hunt Package includes (1) either Sika Buck, Young Trophy Yak, Scimitar Oryx (26-30"), and either (1) Blackbuck Doe or (1) Corsican/Mouflon 22" Ram total for the Father and the Son/Daughter.

Our #2 Father and Son/Daugther Hunt Package includes (2) Wild Boars for the Father and the Son/Daughter.
Esteban not only took a 422 inch Elk (#2 in the World with a Crossbow), but took two amazing whitetail bucks. The first, scoring in at 197 2/8 inches gross B&C, or SCI, was taken just before dark on Sunday.

This 17 point buck had a 17 2/8 inch inside spread with a nearly 6 inch drop tine.

Esteban's 2nd buck, taken on Monday evening, had 27 scorable points and officially measures 200 5/8 inches with a 19 7/8" inside spread.

Both deer were guided by Texas Hunt Lodge manager, Justin Taylor in Kerr County. Both deer are the Pending World Record with a Crossbow, one as a typical deer and the other non-typical.

New World Record Elk taken with Texas Hunt Lodge

New Pending World Record Elk Taken in Kerr County, Texas

Texas Hunt Lodge client, Kyle Bauer, took the new World Record Estate Rocky Mountain Elk this weekend. Kyle Bauer and his 16 yr old son, Zach, of Humble, TX booked the hunt with Guide and Texas Hunt Lodge owner, Aaron Bulkley, back in early April. The hunt took place on Friday and Saturday on the Las Catarinas Ranch in northwest Kerr County. The first evening out, Friday, Guides Dennis Kneese and Aaron Bulkley were able to get the clients in front of plenty of big Elk ranging from 350 to 440 inches, but we needed to see the “Lightning Bull” before we let Kyle make up his mind. The Guides had named this giant 8x9 Bull Elk the “Lightning Bull” as the only time you caught a glimpse of him was when he busted out of the trees running full steam ahead, therefore no one actually knew how big he was going to be.

The hunt started around 5:00pm Friday evening with no success in located the “Lightning Bull”……by 7:00am the following morning, Kyle and his son Zach were back on the ranch in search of him. Guides Dennis and Aaron hunted the clients both Safari Style and Spot and Stalk that morning, and subsequently put 16 yr old Zach on a monster 4 Horned Ram. Zach shot the Ram with a Horton 150 Crossbow, and scoring a whopping 444.8 cm with Trophy Game Records of the World, became the new pending World Record as well.

The Guides and Hunters all broke for a quick BBQ lunch, but couldn’t wait to get back out onto the ranch to try and find the big bull. The guides agreed the best strategy was to hit all of the water holes on the ranch throughout the afternoon as they had seen other big bull elk coming in the heat of the day for a drink over the past few weeks. The strategy proved to be unsuccessful as the afternoon drew on, so then it was up to the guides to walk the brush and try pushing the “Lightning Bull” out into the open. On just our first attempt of hitting some thick brush on foot, Dennis Kneese walked up on the Bull sleeping, and in an instant, the “Lightning Bull” broke out on a sprint. Kyle and Aaron spotted the bull running through the trees, about 300 yards away, and finally come to a stop once he met up with another bull elk grazing in a meadow. With only a quick glimpse of the antlers, Aaron knew this was the “Lightning Bull”, and he threw up the shooting sticks for Kyle to rest his rifle. From 100 yards, and through a split oak tree, Kyle connected with the bull, and put him down with his 7mm mag rifle.

Kyle Bauer’s Bull Elk was officially measured by SCI and Trophy Game Records (TGR) Officials, and came out at a whopping 503 5/8 inches SCI becoming the new pending Estate Typical World Record Rocky Mountain Elk taken with a rifle, and 1177.4 centimeters with Trophy Game Records of the World as the largest Elk ever recorded.

The “Lightning Bull” will now be honored as a Diamond Trophy (largest ever taken for that species and method of hunting) for both the SCI and TGR Record Books this coming year.

The Texas Hunt Lodge, owned by Aaron Bulkley, is a full service hunt package provider, and was honored to win “Outfitter of the Year 2009-2010”. The all inclusive hunt packages they provide include exceptional Bed and Breakfast style accommodations, over 60 Exotic game species to hunt year round in the Texas Hill Country, Exotic game meals, private access to the Guadalupe River, and much more. All hunts are guided and take place on one of 10 different ranches in the Kerrville area. Las Catarinas Ranch, owned by JA Whittenburg IV and JA Whittenburg V, is the main hunting concession of the Texas Hunt Lodge, and was the recipient of the “2009-2010 Ranch of the Year Award.”

I just received an email from some clients regarding how they liked their Watusi and Bison meat which they harvested with Texas Hunt Lodge. Here are a few recipe ideas:

The Watusi is very lean and a little tough, which is no
surprise. Flavor is interesting - as there isn't any flavor at all! No
beef flavor, nor game flavor! It is bizarre.

Regular hamburger grind is recommended, chilli grind was a
bit tough (at least with that recipe). I'll turn it into
breakfast sausage.

We have had it in meatballs with italian sausage, and it was
great. We had 2 batches of chilli, and the regular grind was fantastic.
And I just made the best crock pot stew ever! We used round steak w/ Eastman
Outdoors brand Italian seasoning with a couple of cans of diced tomatoes
++. The seasoning is for game & I think it utilizes enzymes for
tenderizing. The meat was firm near the end of cooking, but was
beautifully tender a couple of hours later.

Best of all - the Watusi fit in the freezer (just).

Glenn grilled some buffalo steaks and said they were a bit
tough, so he just needs to use a wet method of cooking - good flavor though.

To free up some freezer space, I offered to take some meat to
the food bank, and the wife about beat me, so I think she likes it too (and is
selfish).

THANKS AGAIN!

All the kids are on Spring Break and then Whitetail season is finally over for those that have MLD permits. The only dates we still have available for March are weekdays, and even then, only about 6 of them.

We will be hosting some big groups this month including (9) hunters next weekend, and (15) hunters the following weekend. We have already knocked down some fantastic trophies this month. Take a look online here

We had a client from Louisiana shoot one of the largest Bison I've ever seen on February 26th

A couple from Colorado shot a very nice Blackbuck Antelope with a Crossbow (#7 Trophy Game Records) and a 37" Scimitar Horned Oryx Bull

and then, last week, I personally took a trophy for myself..a huge Blackbuck Antelope (30+") and number 40 in the World with Safari Club International

This should be a great month for trophy animals....the rain has cleared up, the grass is turning green, and the animals all look healthy.

We also have some great specials running right now on some Super Exotics including Nubian Ibex for $6950 and a Bongo for $21,000. Check out all of our Hunt Specials
